Bury College University Centre is delighted to introduce to you Helen McGuirk, Volunteer of the Year.

Helen was recognised for her extraordinary volunteering efforts during the Greater Manchester Police Bury Divisional Awards 2017. The awards evening was a special event which celebrated the exceptional work officers, constables and volunteers play within Bury’s police force.

Helen, who is currently studying the Working with Children and Families BA Hons Degree course at Bury College University Centre, enrolled onto the course after deciding to embark on a career change after 17 years of working in the travel industry. The three-year degree covers a wide range of issues affecting children and families in today’s society and can lead graduates into jobs ranging from schools to family support work.

Helens volunteering career first started at Home Start, a service which offers support to families in crisis. This service helps families who made need support before intervention from social services. Here Helen spent two years looking after families, helping them organise their lives and offering support and guidance.

In July 2017, Helen, who is 42 years old and lives in Bury, started working alongside the Bury police service and volunteered for STRIVE, an initiative which has been set-up to work with victims of domestic abuse incidents.

Helen was nominated for her dedication and eagerness. The mother of two was overwhelmed with her award. Helen said, “I was gobsmacked to win and absolutely thrilled! During the awards, the PCSOs, specials and volunteers were told how the police couldn’t do their jobs without our contribution.

Helen juggles her volunteering alongside two jobs where she cares for a young lady with complex needs as well as a 10-year-old boy with autism. As well as this, Helen is performing excellently at university and is currently averaging a first.

Helen added, “I am really enjoying my studies and my volunteering roles. It’s a big juggling act but it’s great! My Bury College University Centre course is brilliant and it will open up lots of opportunities for me in the future.”
