This course has been designed for those who wish to pursue or advance their career in Sport Health and Fitness.

During the course you will gain a wide range of sector knowledge tied to practical skills gained in research, self-study, directed study and workplace scenarios.

You will cover a range of modules including:

  • Professional Skills (Pearson-set)
  • Physical Activity, Lifestyle and Health
  • Lifestyle Coaching
  • Training, Fitness and Testing
  • Sports Massage

Your knowledge will be tested through a combination of assessment methods, including essays and reports, presentations, tutorial exercises and group work. Some practical sessions will be included to help you develop kinaesthetic skills.

Students are encouraged to develop a range of transferable skills including:

  • Self-Management and development
  • Manage group dynamics and team work
  • Communicate and present to different audiences
  • Manage tasks and solve problems
  • Numeracy and literacy skills
  • Apply design and creativity

The variety of assessment methods used are designed to place emphasis on your ability to demonstrate the following cognitive skills:

  • Reason critically
  • Identify and solve problems
  • Analyse and interpret
  • Application of theoretical concepts

You will be required to demonstrate these skills a number of times throughout the programme either individually or collectively. You will need to be aware that the development of these skills will be beneficial in terms of achieving Merit and Distinction grades in other modules studied.

During this course you will enjoy trips and visits which will help you learn outside the classroom settings and enable you to become more employable within the field of sport.

You will also have the opportunity to undertake a Level 2 Fitness Instructor or Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification.

Successful completion of the HNC in Sport and Exercise Science guarantees a place on the second year of a BA (Hons) Sport, Coaching and Physical Education at the University of Cumbria.

Individuals who successfully complete the HNC may wish to progress onto a degree or secure employment in Personal Training, Lifestyle Coaching, or the Nutrition and Education industries.

Entry Requirements

  • 48-64 UCAS points from a full Level 3 qualification such as BTEC, A Level or an Access course in Sport
  • GCSE English and Maths at grade 9-4 (A*-C) or equivalent
  • We may admit applicants who do not have a Level 3 qualification in an appropriate area but who hold alternative qualifications and/or experience demonstrating appropriate knowledge and skills at Level 3
