Professional Development for Teaching Assistants BA (Hons) Top up


About the course:

The Professional Development for Teaching Assistants BA (Hons) top up is an exciting course taught at Bury College University Centre and validated by the University of Bolton. It is ideal if you have successfully completed a Foundation Degree for Teaching Assistants and allows you to develop a greater understanding of the psychology and philosophy of education and explore educational leadership in greater depth.

You will also have the opportunity to undertake detailed research into an educational issue and complete a
dissertation. The programme will provide the opportunity to progress onto postgraduate courses in teacher
education and other related fields and to take up employment opportunities in the field of education.

Please note that this course does not lead directly to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Entry requirements:

• Applicants will normally possess a recognised Teaching Assistant related qualification comprising at least 120 credits at HE4 and 120 credits at HE5; for example a Foundation Degree for Teaching Assistants

• Applicants should also have 5 GCSEs grade C or above including maths and English Language

• If you are intending to teach in the primary sector you will also require a GCSE Science qualification to progress onto Primary Training courses

• The following qualifications and subjects are not accepted: Adult Literacy, Adult Numeracy, Functional Skills, Key Skills Application of Number and Communication

Course assessment

You will be assessed by a variety of methods including presentations, observations, case studies and written assignments.

Career and professional development

Whilst the course does not lead directly to Qualified Teacher Status, the Top-up does allow access to career pathways that require a full honours degree. Previous graduates have taken up posts through Schools Direct or new employment opportunities within education, as well as progressing onto postgraduate courses in teacher education and other related fields.

 

Additional costs:

All students receive an initial allocation of 600 print credits per academic year; additional credits can then be purchased if required. Photocopying facilities are available in the LRC at an additional cost.
