About the course:

This degree, which is awarded by the University of Cumbria and taught at Bury College, is aimed at people wanting to work with children, young people and families. It covers a wide range of issues affecting children and families in today’s society. Each of the modules provides a secure grounding in issues for all professionals working in multi-agency contexts with children and their carers. The course offers you the opportunity to continue studying at a higher level, whilst broadening your knowledge and understanding gained at level 3, or through your previous experience

Entry requirements:

• 80 UCAS points or equivalent in a Level 3 qualification

• Applicants should also have five GCSEs at Grade C or above (or equivalent) including English

• The college will also consider applicants who have passed a Kitemarked Access to Higher Education course (equivalent to 80 UCAS points)

• If you do not have the standard entry requirements but have relevant work experience or an alternative qualification you may still be eligible for the course

• You may be required to attend for an interview or assessment

• All students will be required to obtain an Enhanced Disclosure from the DBS Service in order to undertake the required placement elements of the course

As part of the Personal/Professional Development modules you will undertake placement in a variety of settings, this
could be paid or voluntary work.

Course assessment

This course includes a wide variety of assessment methods aimed at building your subject knowledge, academic and professional skills. The assessment involves a considerable amount of group work and creative assessment and will enable you to learn a range of new skills.

 

Special features

The placement aspect of the course allows you to explore the breadth of the workforce opportunites relevant to this degree. Through placement students can build professional networks to enhance future employability.


Career and professional development:

Career opitions are varied, ranging from work in schools and other settings to family support work through a range of organisations. You can also apply to progress onto post graduate study to work towards QTS, social work or other fields.

 

Additional Costs:

All students receive an initial allocation of 600 credits per academic year for printing and photocopying, additional credits can be purchased if required. Photocopying facilities are available in the LRC at an additional cost. DBS Clearance will be required before commencing placement. Cost £44.00.
