About the course:

The Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Business offers students a broad introduction to the subject area through a range of units, which creates the opportunity to gain relevant skills, knowledge and experience across a range of business sectors. This builds core skills and knowledge while preparing students for subject specialisation and progression to at Level 5. Students will gain a wide range of sector knowledge tied to practical skills gained in research, self-study, directed study and workplace scenarios.

Entry requirements:

For students who have recently been in education, the entry profile is likely to include one of the following:

• A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Business

• A GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C (or equivalent) including Maths and English

• Other related Level 3 qualifications

• An Access to Higher Education Certificate or Access to Business awarded by an approved further education institution


Topics covered:

At Level 4 students develop a broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of the business sector through eight core modules. The modules are:

• Business and the Business Environment

• Marketing Essentials

• Human Resource Management

• Management and Operations

• Management Accounting

• Managing a Successful Business Project

• Business Law

• Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management

 

Course assessment

You will be assessed by a variety of methods including presentations, observations, case studies and written assignments.


Special features:

Graduates successfully completing the Higher National Certificate will be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the basic concepts of business. They will be able to communicate accurately and appropriately and they will have the qualities needed for employment that requires some degree of personal responsibility. They will have developed a range of transferable skills to ensure effective team working, initiatives, organisational competence and problem-solving strategies. They will be adaptable and flexible in their approach to business, show resilience under pressure, and meet challenging targets within a given resource.


Career and professional development

Following the completion of the HNC the next stage could be the Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Business which
would then create the opportunity on completion to apply for such courses as:

• BSc (Hons) in Business and Management (top up)

• BA and BSc (Hons) in Business Studies (top up)

• After completing a BTEC Higher National Certificate or Diploma, students can also progress directly into employment.

 

Additional costs: All students receive an initial allocation of 600 credits per academic year for printing and photocopying, additional credits can be purchased if required.
